Portugal 2–1 Croatia: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first World Cup knockout-stage goal before Gonçalo Ramos delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner in Toronto.
Portugal survived a breathless finish to defeat Croatia 2–1 in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, booking a high-profile last-16 meeting with Spain.
Cristiano Ronaldo finally ended one of the few remaining droughts of his extraordinary career, converting a second-half penalty for his first goal in a World Cup knockout match. But it was substitute Gonçalo Ramos who ultimately decided the contest, rising to head home Portugal’s winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Croatia Strike First After the Break
Portugal controlled much of the ball during the opening half but struggled to turn possession into clear scoring opportunities. Croatia remained patient, defended in numbers and waited for the match to open up.
That approach paid off in the 53rd minute.
Josip Stanišić’s pass found Ivan Perišić, who brought the ball under control before directing a composed finish toward the far corner. The goal changed the mood inside Toronto Stadium and forced Portugal to play with greater urgency.
Rafael Leão came close to producing an immediate response when his powerful effort crashed against the crossbar. Ronaldo then appeared to have equalized after lifting the ball over Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livaković, but the Portugal captain was ruled offside.

Ronaldo Ends His World Cup Knockout Wait
Portugal’s pressure eventually brought a penalty after Renato Veiga was pulled down inside the area by Nikola Vlašić.
Ronaldo stepped forward in the 68th minute with history waiting. The 41-year-old drove his penalty down the middle, drawing Portugal level and scoring the first World Cup knockout goal of his career. He also became the oldest player to score during the knockout phase of the men’s tournament.
It was a landmark moment for a player who had appeared in eight previous World Cup knockout matches without scoring. Ronaldo celebrated with visible relief as Portugal’s supporters erupted, but the match was far from finished.
Coach Roberto Martínez substituted his captain in the 81st minute as Portugal searched for fresh energy. Ramos entered and soon became the central figure in a remarkable conclusion.
Ramos Delivers When Portugal Needs Him Most
With extra time approaching, Rafael Leão found space and sent a dangerous cross into Croatia’s penalty area. Ramos climbed above the defenders and powered his header into the net in the 94th minute, sending Portugal’s bench racing onto the field in celebration.
Even then, the drama was not over.
Croatia appeared to have rescued the match with virtually the final attack. Portuguese celebrations stopped, while Ronaldo watched anxiously from the bench. However, a VAR review found an offside in the buildup, cancelling the equalizer and confirming Portugal’s place in the next round.
For Croatia, the defeat brought a painful end to another determined World Cup campaign. For Portugal, it was a victory built on resilience, one historic Ronaldo penalty and a decisive contribution from the next generation.
Ronaldo may have claimed the headline moment, but Ramos supplied the final word.
Portugal now advance to face Spain in the Round of 16, where their defensive concentration and finishing will face an even greater test. After surviving Croatia and one of the tournament’s wildest endings, belief within the Portuguese squad will only be growing.
