Anthropic’s new Claude Opus 5 model isn’t trying to be the biggest brain in the room. It’s trying to be the one you actually use all day. The company says Opus 5 delivers near-Fable 5 performance at roughly half the cost, with a focus on coding, everyday productivity tasks and stronger built-in safety.

Claude Opus 5: Near-frontier power at a discount

Opus 5 is Anthropic’s latest flagship in its Claude lineup, positioned as the model you hand most serious work to. The company says it comes close to the capabilities of its frontier Claude Fable 5 model while cutting costs roughly in half, a trade-off aimed squarely at businesses that care as much about cloud bills as benchmark charts.

The model is designed for day-to-day office work and computer programming: think summarizing long documents, drafting analyses, writing production-grade code and acting as the central brain for AI agents. It’s available across Anthropic’s platforms and now serves as the default on Claude Max, the company’s premium consumer tier, as well as the strongest option on Claude Pro.

Anthropic is blunt about the positioning. Fable 5 remains its most capable system overall, especially on long, autonomous jobs that run for hours or days. But the company argues that most commercially valuable AI work sits in a “middle band” of difficulty — tasks that are hard but not research-grade — where an efficient, nearly-as-smart model like Opus 5 makes more sense than paying frontier prices.

Pricing and efficiency: why Opus 5 matters for budgets

Opus 5 keeps the same list price as its predecessor, Opus 4.8: $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. The difference is how much useful work Anthropic claims it can get done with those tokens.

The company frames Opus 5 as delivering roughly Fable-level performance on many practical workloads while consuming fewer tokens and less time than earlier Claude models. Enterprises, which pay by the token, are being nudged to think less about raw intelligence and more about how far each dollar takes them.

A key part of that pitch is an adjustable “effort” setting. Instead of always running at maximum reasoning depth, customers can dial the model up or down depending on the job: lighter settings for quick replies and triage; heavier ones when accuracy and deep reasoning matter more than latency or cost. Internally, Anthropic’s charts focus on performance-per-dollar rather than peak scores, underlining how much the AI race has shifted from bragging rights to economics.

How Claude Opus 5 stacks up on benchmarks

On paper, Opus 5 is a major step up from Opus 4.8 and a serious rival to both Fable 5 and competing models in several domains.

  • On Frontier-Bench v0.1, an agentic terminal coding benchmark, Opus 5 scores 43.3%, more than double Opus 4.8’s 18.7% and ahead of Fable 5’s 33.7%.
  • On OSWorld 2.0, a computer-use benchmark, Anthropic says Opus 5 surpasses Fable 5’s best result at just over one-third of the cost.
  • On ARC-AGI 3, which measures abstract problem-solving on novel tasks, the company reports Opus 5 scoring roughly three times higher than the next best model.

That doesn’t make Opus 5 the winner everywhere. Anthropic acknowledges it still lags Mythos 5 on cybersecurity and biology research work, and that an OpenAI-family system leads one of the agentic coding benchmarks. The company’s own spokesperson also draws a sharp line between where Opus 5 excels and where Fable 5 still earns its premium pricing.

Opus 5, they say, dominates “bounded” problems — jobs with clear end states that benchmarks can capture, like solving a coding task or completing a workflow. Fable 5, by contrast, is built for long-horizon autonomy: multi-day research projects, dense reading assignments and complex agentic work that has to stay coherent across many steps.

In other words, benchmarks tend to reward the kind of bounded tasks Opus 5 is optimized for. The longest, messiest, most open-ended problems are still where Fable 5 is meant to shine.

Real-world workloads: Opus 5 as a daily driver

Anthropic wants customers to think of its lineup in tiers, with Opus 5 taking the center slot. The company’s own shorthand is simple: Opus 5 as the daily driver, Fable 5 for ambitious, long-running jobs, Sonnet 5 for high-volume workloads where speed and unit economics dominate, and Haiku 4.5 for lightweight sub-agents and instantaneous replies.

That framing maps neatly onto the kinds of work enterprises are actually deploying AI on. Many of the heaviest real-world uses fall into predictable categories: coding assistants embedded in IDEs, research copilots for analysts, workflow engines that chain tools together to handle customer tickets, and orchestration brains for fleets of smaller agents. These are all jobs where bounded difficulty and iteration matter more than multi-day persistence.

Early customer stories underscore Anthropic’s efficiency thesis. In legal tech, one company reports that Opus 5 can match the maximum-reasoning mode of Opus 4.8 while generating about a quarter fewer tokens on average. A financial research user says the model solves hard modeling problems with higher accuracy, while requiring fewer tool calls and significantly less time. Automation platforms report that Opus 5 can now run end-to-end workflows — such as churn-prevention automations — that previous Claude models failed, and do it without increasing token usage.

For cost-conscious AI teams, that kind of progression can be more compelling than a new high score on a leaderboard. A model that passes the same tests with fewer tokens changes the economics of which projects are viable.

Safety, security and the Fable 5 shadow

Opus 5 isn’t launching in a vacuum. It arrives just weeks after the debut of Fable 5, which has already drawn scrutiny from U.S. officials concerned that its capabilities could be misused for foreign military intelligence. Those concerns were serious enough that Fable 5 was temporarily pulled from availability shortly after its release.

Against that backdrop, Anthropic is eager to present Opus 5 as a more measured, controllable system. Internally, testing suggests the model is less capable of exploiting cyber vulnerabilities than Fable 5, which means its safety guardrails can be somewhat less restrictive while still keeping misuse in check. At the same time, the company says Opus 5 is harder to “jailbreak” than its earlier models — less prone to being tricked into actions it was not designed to perform.

The message is subtle but clear: Opus 5 aims to be powerful enough for serious work, but not so capable that it triggers the same level of geopolitical anxiety as Fable 5. For enterprise buyers already navigating internal compliance reviews and external regulation, that balance matters.

It also feeds into a broader question hanging over the industry: how much raw capability do you really want in the systems that run your everyday workflows? Anthropic’s answer, at least with Opus 5, is “enough to beat your current tools, but not so much that the safety scaffolding overwhelms the experience.”

Open vs. proprietary: the Kimi K3 question

The Opus 5 launch also touches a growing fault line between closed, proprietary models and so-called open-weight systems you can download and run yourself. Asked about Kimi K3 — an “open” model from Chinese firm Moonshot that U.S. officials have accused of freeloading on Anthropic’s work — Anthropic’s leadership was cautious.

Rather than attacking any single contender, they questioned how well open-weight models will really handle the messy, complicated real-world projects that Claude is being asked to take on. The suggestion is that benchmarks and one-off demos may flatter open systems, but the sustained workloads enterprises care about are a different challenge.

The subtext for buyers is straightforward. Anthropic is betting that a proprietary, heavily tuned model like Claude Opus 5 will run entire businesses more reliably than an open-weight system a customer has to maintain and harden themselves. As AI infrastructure spreads deeper into critical workflows, the appeal of “free” may fade if it comes with hidden engineering and security costs.

Where Opus 5 fits in Anthropic’s roadmap

Opus 5 also arrives unusually quickly. Anthropic’s product team describes it as more efficient than May’s Opus 4.8 and characterizes the upgrade cadence as part of a rapid, ongoing push to “consistently deliver frontier intelligence” to customers as accessibly as possible with each generation.

The company is explicit about how it wants customers to make choices across its stack. For “days-long, very autonomous projects,” it still recommends Fable 5. For value and versatility — the model you trust with everything from complex spreadsheets to multi-step code refactors — Opus 5 is meant to be the default. Underneath that layer, smaller models fill in the edges where latency, throughput or cost-per-call are the decisive factors.

That kind of stratified lineup is becoming the norm across the industry. But Anthropic has an unusual amount of leverage in how it draws those boundaries. By late 2025, one external analysis estimated that Claude already handled roughly 40% of enterprise large-language-model usage, with Claude-focused coding tools alone driving around $1 billion in annualized revenue. When a vendor at that scale says “this is the tier most work lives in,” customers listen.

What This Means

Claude Opus 5 is less about chasing the last few percentage points of intelligence and more about making near-frontier AI something companies can afford to put everywhere. Benchmarks suggest it can already outscore Anthropic’s own frontier model in some bounded, testable domains, especially coding and computer-use tasks, while costing significantly less to run.

That doesn’t make Fable 5 obsolete. There will always be jobs that need the longest attention span and deepest reasoning Anthropic can muster. But for the bulk of coding work, knowledge tasks and agentic workflows that define today’s AI deployments, Opus 5 looks like the model Anthropic expects you to actually live with.

In an industry where capability headlines tend to drown out everything else, Opus 5 is a reminder that the next phase of the AI race is going to be fought on efficiency, safety and fit for purpose. If Anthropic is right, the winning models won’t just be the smartest — they’ll be the ones that quietly make the biggest dent in your cloud bill without compromising on what matters.
