Two years ago, the hottest job in tech was a person who was good at typing instructions into a chatbot. That job is mostly gone. The standalone “prompt engineer” title has fallen roughly 30% from its peak, even as the skill itself showed up in triple the number of postings. That single data point tells you everything about where the AI job market has landed in 2026: the novelty premium is dead, and the deployment premium is enormous.

The money is real. An analysis of more than a billion job ads across 27 countries found that roles requiring AI skills now pay a 62% wage premium over comparable roles that don’t, up from 57% a year earlier and more than double what it was two years before that. Hiring for those roles is growing about 69% year over year against 9% for the job market overall. On the biggest professional network’s annual ranking of fastest-growing US job titles, AI roles took three of the top five spots, with AI engineer sitting at number one.

Here’s what’s actually paying, and why.

### The Builders

#### 1. AI / Machine Learning Engineer

The default title of the era, and the one that tops the growth rankings. These are the people shipping models into production: retrieval pipelines, fine-tuning, evaluation harnesses, inference cost. The most commonly listed skills are LangChain, retrieval-augmented generation, and PyTorch. Hiring clusters hardest in San Francisco, New York, and Dallas.

Median total compensation for machine learning engineers in the US sits around $280,000, though that number skews toward big tech reporting. At a normal mid-size company, $155,000 to $200,000 base is a more honest read.

#### 2. Forward Deployed / Applied AI Engineer

The sleeper hit. Frontier Labs figured out that demos close deals and deployments keep them, so they started hiring engineers who embed inside a customer’s messy environment and make the thing actually work against legacy databases, SSO, and data residency rules. Postings grew roughly 800% in under a year.

Compensation is brutal in a good way. Palantir’s classic version pays a median around $215,000. Staff-level equivalents at frontier labs clear $600,000, with equity making up 55% to 70% of the package. That last detail matters: a big total comp figure at a private lab is not cash.

#### 3. MLOps / AI Platform Engineer

The unglamorous job that everything else depends on. Model versioning, monitoring, cost optimization, GPU scheduling, governance plumbing. Hiring managers now describe MLOps as a minimum requirement rather than a differentiator, which is exactly why the people who are genuinely good at it are scarce. AI applications are compute-hungry, expensive, and prone to falling over. You cannot scale an AI business without this team.

#### 4. AI Research Scientist

Still the highest-ceiling technical path, still the hardest to enter. Federal wage data puts the median for computer and information research scientists at $140,300, but that figure badly understates what frontier labs pay for people who publish. Most entrants transition from data science or ML engineering, and a master’s or PhD is typical.

#### 5. Data Scientist

The role everyone declared dead in 2023 is projected to be one of the fastest-growing occupations in the entire US economy: 35% growth over the coming decade, with about 24,800 openings a year and a median wage of $120,230. For context, the median across all US occupations is $50,980. The reason is unsexy and durable. AI generates and consumes staggering amounts of data, and someone has to make it trustworthy.

### The Translators

#### 6. AI Consultant / Strategist

Ranked near the very top of the fastest-growing titles, and the clearest signal that enterprises have moved from experiments to budgets. The work is scoping: figuring out which problems deserve AI, which don’t, and communicating the trade-offs to people holding the money. Common backgrounds include software engineering, product management, and founding a company. Hiring is heaviest in San Francisco, New York, and Boston.

#### 7. AI Product Manager

Product managers across US tech report a median total compensation around $228,000. AI PMs sit meaningfully above that, with senior packages commonly landing between $250,000 and $400,000 and frontier-lab outliers running far higher. The premium goes to people who understand model evaluation and the UX problem nobody had to solve before: designing around a system that gives a different answer every time.

### The Guardrails

#### 8. AI Security Engineer

Information security analysts are projected to grow 21% through 2035, expanding from about 192,900 US jobs to 233,400, at a median wage of $129,180. Federal analysts specifically name increased AI adoption as a driver. Agentic systems introduced entirely new attack surfaces — prompt injection, token exfiltration, model manipulation — and defenders who understand them are rarer than defenders who understand firewalls.

#### 9. AI Governance and Risk Lead

The fastest-growing professional category almost nobody was tracking in 2023. Demand for AI governance skills jumped roughly 150% year over year. Practitioners working in AI governance alone report a median around $151,800; those covering both privacy and AI governance report above $169,700; technical governance roles inside tech companies reach roughly $221,000.

The driver is regulatory, not aspirational. European rules impose penalties up to €35 million or 7% of global annual turnover, and the obligations reach any company whose AI output touches the EU market. Someone has to own conformity assessments and technical documentation. Very few people can.

### The Physical Layer

#### 10. Data Center Technician and Electrician

The most overlooked AI job on this list involves conduit. Analysis of more than 50 million job postings found demand for robotics technicians up 107% since late 2022, HVAC and cooling engineers up 67%, construction roles up 30%, and electricians up 18%. US construction needs an estimated 349,000 net new workers this year alone.

Pay has followed. Data center electricians in Northern Virginia clear $120,000, and reports of young tradespeople earning $240,000 to $280,000 with heavy overtime on hyperscale projects are no longer outliers. No degree, no debt, and a job that cannot be done remotely by a model.

### What This Means

Three things stand out if you’re planning a move.

First, pure AI knowledge is no longer the asset. It’s the entry ticket. Every role on this list pairs model fluency with something else: production engineering, customer judgment, regulatory literacy, or a trade license. The people who got hurt in the prompt engineering collapse weren’t bad at prompting. They only knew prompting.

Second, be skeptical of headline compensation. Equity now makes up more than half of packages at the top of the market, and those valuations are not cash until they are.

Third, the on-ramp is narrowing. Entry-level roles in AI-exposed fields are seven times more likely to demand traditionally senior skills like judgment and leadership, and those seniorized junior roles have grown 35% since 2019 while other entry-level roles fell 10%. If you’re early in your career, the fastest path in is a portfolio that proves you shipped something and measured whether it worked.

The AI boom is not one job market. It’s a builder market, a translator market, a compliance market, and a construction market, all moving at different speeds. Pick the one that matches what you’re already good at.
